@conference{Alexandris&Fotinea2003, author = "Alexandris, C. and Fotinea, Stavroula-Evita", abstract = "In the present paper we propose that in Modern Greek a sub-group of discourse particles demonstrates a double function. Specifically, we propose that these discourse particles may function both as signals related to the structure of the discourse and as indicators of positive politeness, which is characteristic of Modern Greek . Thus, this subgroup of discourse particles, which we will name “politeness markers” also constitutes a cultural element in Modern Greek dialogs. The behavior of discourse particles was evaluated for the construction of a dialog system for Speech Technology applications in the domain of customer service.", address = "Vienna, Austria", booktitle = "Proc. of the 15th European Summer School in Logic Language and Information (ESSLLI 03) Workshop “The Meaning and Implementation of Discourse Particles”", editor = "Stede, M. ; Zeevat, H.", keywords = "discourse, discourse particles, dialog systems, Greek", month = "18-29 August ", pages = "41-48", title = "{D}iscourse particles as {C}ultural {E}lements: {U}sing {D}iscourse {P}articles as {I}ndicators of {P}ositive {P}oliteness in the {D}iscourse {S}tructure of {D}ialog {S}ystems for {M}odern {G}reek ", volume = "6", year = "2003", }
