The aim of the AQUARELLE project was the design and development of a distributed multimedia information system which will provide access to multimedia documents concerning the European cultural heritage: monuments, paintings, sculptures etc.

All the databases are under the direct supervision and management of local agencies, which are responsible for the digitization and introduction of the related data. These bases are connected in a continuous contact network, allowing the user to have uniform access and an overall view of the European cultural heritage.

The role of the Institute in this project was to build linguistic thesauri translation assisting tools which concern the specific field of knowledge and the construction of language support tools for the extraction of information from the distributed multilingual system.
