George Alexis Ioannakis was born in 1986 in Filderstadt, Germany, lived in Tübingen for the first 10 years of his life and then moved to Alexandroupolis, Greece. In 2011 he received his Diploma from the Rural and Surveying Engineering department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He did his thesis entitled "3d Documentation of Cultural Monuments Using Laser Scanner – Case Study: Monastery Of Panagia, Goumenissa, Greece" under the supervision of Professor Petros Patias. During his studies he successfully attended an academic semester at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics with ERASMUS exchange program. In 2018 he received his Ph.D. in the research domain of Signal, image and 3D object processing, Machine learning, Content-based Retrieval and Computational Geometry and Topology, entitled “3D Objects: Texture Processing and Content-based Retrieval” under the supervision of Professor Christodoulos Chamzas from the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). During his doctoral studies he had the opportunity to assist undergraduate students in the preparation of their thesis. Since the beginning of 2019 is a postdoctoral fellow at ECE, DUTH with supervisor Professor Christodoulos Chamzas. Also, during the period 2014-2018 he worked as a teaching assistant at ECE, DUTH assisting in the courses: a) Pattern Recognition, b) Circuits, Signals and Systems and c) Digital Signal Processing. In addition, since 2013 he has been involved in both the writing of research proposals and implementation of research programs at the Athena Research Center and the Democritus University of Thrace since the beginning of his Ph.D. studies.

Within his research interests are processing, content-based retrieval and classification of three-dimensional (3D) polygonal meshes, photogrammetry, digital image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and the construction and programming of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Systems) mainly for cultural heritage applications. His scientific work contains scientific works published in international journals and peer-reviewed journals and conferences and he serves as a reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Panhellenic Association of Rural and Surveying Engineers, IEEE and CAA.
