Computational morphological dictionary

Category: Language resources

The computational morphological dictionary contains more than 80.000 lemmas, which in their expanded (inflected) form extend the lexical base to approximately 2.000.000 different entries. The existence of variation in spelling and inflectional types as a result of diglossia in Modern Greek has been taken seriously into account. So, for instance, the Greek word for honesty is included with both its forms / timi'otita / and / timi'otis /.

The encoding of the lemmas follows the inflectional morphology of Modern Greek. Each lemma is inflected according to the appropriate inflectional paradigm and is accompanied by a set of its morphosyntactic features. The integrated software includes a morphological parser, which makes use of the lexical information to recognize and tag a given word and to generate all its inflected forms.

The first application based on ILSP / R.C. "Athena"'s morphological dictionary is a spelling and grammar checker developed at ILSP / R.C. "Athena", which is already in the market under the name Symfonia. The programme, embedded in Microsoft Word 97 or Word 2000, helps the user to trace any misspelled form or ungrammatical use of a word in a document.

Symfonia is not only a spell-checking programme, but also includes innovative functions such as a partial agreement check, a customized dictionary for handling new terms, and the morphological tagging of a given word.
