Maria Giagkou holds a PhD in Linguistics (Department of Philology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). Her PhD thesis investigated corpus-informed language pedagogy and proposed a methodology for the automatic estimation of reading difficulty for the construction of pedagogically relevant corpora. She holds an MSc in Language Technology (National & Kapodistrian University of Athens & National Technical University of Athens) and a bachelor's degree in Philology (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).

Maria is a research associate at the Institute for Language & Speech Processing / 'Athena' R.C. since 1998. She has participated in a number of European and National R&D projects in the fields of TELL and NLP.
