Andros, the noble island

Category: Cultural Products

The book is a thorough presentation of the island with bilingual parallel texts. It includes information on the history of the island, the archaeological sites and findings, the environment, the economy, the architecture, the churches and monasteries as well as numerous photographs. It is also a user's guide for the respective DVD-ROM, including content from the electronic edition. The aim of the series is to offer a structured thesaurus of knowledge about the island that will point out its cultural distinctiveness.

"A fertile island with abundant waters and the prettiest countryside in the world. This is how Frieseman the German traveller described Andros in 1789. This is the sight that meets the visitor’s eyes when he travels through the island. Abundant running water, which maintains the lush vegetation, the beautiful olive groves and the sweet-smelling fruit and citrus trees. The lush green landscape, combines with the elegant houses of Andros, and gives a feeling of ingenious arrangement. Serpentine footpaths, well built bridges and sandy bays, complete the island’s charm. The visitor seems to be walking through the island’s history as he follows the quiet narrow paths at Paleopolis, Strapouries, Lamyra, Menites, Stenies, Aidonia, where buildings appear at every step (watermills, dovecotes, mansions), their structures bearing the traditions of centuries on them."
