Imperfective past is associated with a wide range of semantic values, temporal as well as modal. This paper is an attempt to account for this polysemy on the basis of a unifying hypothesis: imperfective past indicates events situated outside the sphere of strict assertive modality. This process is realized as a restriction on the possible alternations within a combinatory system involving the following mechanisms: verification, validation and assignment of modal value.
